A water stain shows up on the ceiling in one spot. The roof gets checked, and the actual entry point turns out to be somewhere else entirely, sometimes several feet away, sometimes on a completely different slope of the roof. It seems like it shouldn’t make sense. A leak should show up where it started, right below it, straight down.
It makes complete sense once you understand what water actually does after it gets past a roof’s outer defenses. It rarely travels in a straight line, and the stain on the ceiling is telling you where water became visible, not where it got in.

Water doesn’t fall straight down through a house
The natural assumption is that water behaves like a simple vertical drip: it enters at one point, and shows up directly below that same point, straight down through the structure. Once water is inside a roof system, though, it’s moving across and along surfaces it was never designed to travel across, and gravity, while real and always present, is only one of several forces acting on it at that point.
The three things water is actually doing
Gravity, but sideways-capable
Water does move downward overall, that part of the intuition is correct. What’s missing is that “down” isn’t always straight down. Water follows the slope and shape of whatever surface it lands on next, including the top of the underlayment described in The Anatomy of a Roof, or the roof deck itself if it makes it that far. That surface can carry water laterally, sometimes a significant distance, before it ever finds a way to drip down into living space.
Capillary action
This is the least intuitive of the three, and the most surprising to learn: water can move sideways, or even slightly against gravity, through very narrow gaps, between two overlapping materials, along a seam, into a hairline crack, purely through surface tension. It’s the same basic effect that pulls water up into a paper towel, or holds a thin film of water between two closely pressed surfaces. Roofs have plenty of narrow overlaps and seams by design, which means plenty of opportunity for this kind of movement, quietly, in directions gravity alone would never predict.
Following the path of least resistance along framing
Once water reaches structural framing members, rafters, trusses, blocking, it tends to travel along that wood’s grain and structure rather than dropping straight through it. Water can move along a framing member for a real distance before finding a gap, a nail hole, or a seam in the ceiling material below where it finally becomes visible.
Why the stain lies to you
Put those three together, and the picture becomes clear: a ceiling stain marks the point where water became visible, not the point where it entered. By the time gravity, capillary action, and structural travel have all had a say, the visible sign of a leak can be a genuinely poor indicator of where the actual problem is, sometimes off by several feet, sometimes on an entirely different part of the roof altogether.
That’s not a random inconsistency. It’s the predictable result of water doing exactly what water does, moving through a structure it was never meant to be inside of in the first place.
Why this matters for diagnosis
This is exactly why a proper leak investigation often means checking areas that seem unrelated to the visible stain, including the transition points covered in The Weak Points, even ones on a different slope or several feet from where the damage actually shows up. It’s also a fair, honest answer to a common frustration: why finding a leak’s real source sometimes takes real time and several areas checked, rather than being obvious just from where the ceiling stain happens to be.
This isn’t meant as a guide to tracing a leak on your own, that’s genuinely a job better suited to a trained eye who knows what to check and in what order. It’s meant to explain why that process looks the way it does, rather than being a quick, obvious fix.
The bottom line
A leak’s visible symptom and its actual cause are often two different locations, connected by a path most people never think to consider. Understanding that path, not just where leaks start, but where the water goes once it’s in, is what separates chasing a stain from actually finding a leak.
